What are the Green Home Grants?
Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the £3 billion Green Home Grant investment in his summer economic statement to support a fund of ‘green recovery’. The aim of the scheme is to lift 900,000 households out of fuel poverty. The government believes that the work done could lead to annual energy bill savings of £600 per household.
How do Green Home Grants work?
Homeowners (including landlords) can apply for Green Home Vouchers by clicking here. In general, one voucher is worth up to £5,000 to cover the costs of green improvements. Low-income households, including those on specific benefits, can receive vouchers worth up to £10,000 which cover 100% of the cost improvements. Households which are in receipt of one or more benefits including universal credit, housing benefit, jobseekers allowance and child tax credits will be classed as low income.
What work can be completed with Green Home Grants?
Grants are currently covering a wide variety of green home improvements including:
- Solid wall, under-floor, cavity wall or roof insulation
- Air source or ground source heat pump (where the home has or is having installed wall and loft insulation)
- Solar thermal (where the home has, or is having installed wall and loft insulation)
Households will need to install at least one of the above measures to qualify for funding.
In addition to this, you can use your voucher for further energy saving measures, including one or more of the following:
- Double or triple glazing/secondary glazing, when replacing single glazing
- Upgrading to energy efficient doors
- Hot water tank/appliance tank thermostats/heating controls
